DBS Check Legalisation for Teaching Abroad

Every overseas teaching employer requires a criminal record check as part of the work permit application. This certificate must be authenticated for use abroad — a raw certificate is not accepted by overseas immigration authorities.

Important: UK Teachers Need ACRO, Not DBS

A DBS certificate is for use within the UK only. For overseas work, you need an ACRO Police Certificate (International Child Protection Certificate). This is the internationally recognised equivalent.

Full Process: UK Teacher → Vietnam

  1. Apply for ACRO Police Certificate (£55 standard, 10 working days)
  2. Notarisation (if required for your destination)
  3. FCDO Authentication (5–10 working days)
  4. Vietnamese Embassy Attestation (5–10 working days)
  5. Submit to employer for work permit

Total timeline: 4–7 weeks. Start at least 2–3 months before your intended move date.
